The Forum Courier of South QueensSeptember 29th - October 5th, 2004 - page 8
The stars youth center in cooperation with the commander of the former Woodhaven Marine Cadets is opening it's doors to a new cadet corps. It will be billed as the S.T.A.R.S. Joint Services Cadet Corps (SJSCC). The organization will teach all about the ways of the military and help cadets build high self-esteem while teaching them valuable skills for their futures. The cadet corps will teach a variety of subjects like, military time, rank structures, First aid, wilderness and urban survival, land navigation, and much, much, more.
Meetings will be held every Wednesday night from 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the S.T.A.R.S. Youth Center, (8 Coleman Square, Howard Beach, across the street from the A train station). There will be additional field training on specified Saturdays throughout each month, as well.
Two orientation nights for interested young people ages 11 - 18 and their parents have been scheduled for Wednesdays, October 6th and 13th, 2004. Both orientations will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. All questions will be answered and preliminary registration will take place at orientation.
As always, volunteers are welcomed. Any adults, or parents, with a military background (any service branch is okay, but Marine Corps preferably) who are willing to give their time to be an instructor in the organization is in need. We are especially seeking female instructors. In addition, if anyone has any old equipment they would like to donate (shelter halves, training rifles, field phones, uniforms, etc.) they would be most appreciated.
