As a result of a recent grant from Fleet Bank, S.T.A.R.S. will be introducing the S.T.A.R.S. Joint Services Cadet Corps this fall. The program provides young men and women in the community with the opportunity to join an elite group.
The group will meet weekly starting in September/October 2004 with recruit training presented as classroom work. Additionally, there will be field training every-other weekend. During the primary training period, Cadets will be taught about time and rank structure, basic marching, history and guard duty, as well as other lessons. The program will include training in urban survival, first-aid, self-defense and physical fitness. The training lends itself to the development of a sense of teamwork, discipline and problem solving.
The Cadet Corps will be led by Marine Cadet Colonel Leonard Cannella, a local Ozone Park resident. Cannella has vast experience running cadet programs for over the past 20 years. His first-hand knowledge comes from being a corporal in the New York Army National Guard. Cannella states that he would like to share with the young people of this area valuable lessons and skills that he has learned and assist them with building high self-esteem and become self-reliant. When looking for a sponsoring organization, S.T.A.R.S. was a perfect fit to start such a cadet program in this community.
During the summer, S.T.A.R.S. will be working diligently with volunteers from the area to develop this program. At this time, S.T.A.R.S. is still looking for adult volunteers, both male and female, preferably with prior service, who are willing to dedicate time to this program. If you are interested in volunteering or getting information for your child, please contact S.T.A.R.S. at (718) 845-6956 or through their website at www.starsyouthcenter.com
